And Mr. Glaeser is dead on acurate. The problem is, men are born to be violent. We cant help it. But we can learn how to control and channell this violence. The problem is our emasculated country has demonised violence. So rather than teach children how to control and chanell this agression, we try to force them to supress it. Then we wonder why so many High Schoolers are going on rampages. If Columbine High had had a shooting range, martial arts classes, and it had taught those kids how to channel their agression, how to use their alienation, we wouldnt be associating the name columbine with slaughter.
We need to bring back PE as a class. We need to bring back boxing, dodgeball, etc. We need to have children taught how to use guns effectively and responsibly. We need to allow young boys to learn how to deal with their innate agression and violence. Instead we try to supress it, to demonise it, and to castigate those who try to understand it. An emasculated society is one which doesn't understand violnece, and so is unable to deal with it. Just look at the changing reaction to the Iraq war. So many of our citizens have no experience wiht violence, that we expect it to be like in the movies. Controlled, straight forward, sanitized, and clean. When we saw it wasn't, when we saw how ugly, how messy, how chaotic it really is, it surprised so many that reactions changed. Of course invading Iraq led to a crapload of deaths. Its war. But how can we understand War, if we dont even understand violence?
